Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)

Daily we spend many hours working on computers and smart phones while sitting at our workstations. This may very well result in RSI.

What is Repetitive Strain Injury?

RSI is defined as a cumulative trauma disorder stemming from prolonged repetitive, forceful, or awkward hand movements. The result is damage to muscles, tendons, and nerves of the neck, shoulder, forearm, and hand, which can cause pain, weakness, numbness, or impairment of motor control.

RSI is a potentially debilitating condition resulting from overusing the hands to perform a repetitive task, such as typing, clicking a mouse, or writing.

How does Repetitive Strain Injury develop?

1.       Fine hand movements, repeated hour after hour, day after day, thousands upon thousands of times, eventually strain the muscles and tendons of the forearms, wrists, and fingers, causing microscopic tears.

2.       Injured muscles tend to contract, decreasing the range of motion necessary for stress free work.

3.       The sheaths that cover delicate tendons run out of lubrication because they are not given time to rest, so tendon and sheath chafe, resulting in pain.

4.       Due to this abrasion, tendons become inflamed, and begin to pinch neighbouring nerves.

5.       This can result in numbness, tingling, or hypersensitivity to touch.

6.       Unless this cycle is interrupted, it repeats itself over and over, and a long-term, chronic problem results.

How to reduce Repetitive Strain Injury in some easy steps:

1.        Set yourself up with an ergonomic workstation. This is perhaps the biggest improvement you can make.

2.       Check your posture. There is no point using an ergonomic workstation if you slouch.

3.       Check your typing position. Your arms should be comfortably by your side, wrists should be straight and hands should float about the keyboard.

4.       Take regular breaks. Every hour, get up from your chair and have a brief walk. Stretch your limbs and relax your eyes. This will help you to be more productive as well as benefit your health.

5.       Exercise regularly.  The stronger your muscles are less likely to break down.

6.       Relax.
