CEEPSA Garden Route Fire Relief Initiative

CEEPSA (George office) took to the road on Thursday 15th June, to offer relief to the horses and property owners who were displaced in the recent fires that scoured 100kms of land along the Southern and Eastern Cape Coastal belt.

Our first stop was at "Tack & Tuck" in George to purchase fencing tape and teff. Tack & Tack generously offered to deliver the teff to Ashgrove Equestrian Center free of charge.

Ashgrove in the Rhenendal district, was thankfully unscathed and they are co-ordinating relief in the Knysna, Buffalo Bay and Plett areas. They have also taken in evacuated horses.

After stopping at Ashgrove we visited Karen, whose farm between Knysna and Buffalo Bay has been decimated. She ran out of time trying to evacuate all of her horses and had to let five of the feral ponies loose that she inherited when she bought the farm. Her farm borders on the N2 and the last she saw of the ponies was when they ran over the highway. That section then burned too. She has been searching since last week for the ponies using community help and drones.

We appeal to CEEPSA members to keep the donations coming. These fires and the concurrent drought have placed immense pressure on the need for fodder.
